Gay

I have said it before but I will say it again- these kids at school crack me up! It never occurs to them that I have lived and had more experiences than they have. Although I am anywhere from 30-37 years older than they are, it just doesn’t register! They are so full of themselves that it never crosses their minds that I had lived a whole life before they were even conceived.

I never say to them that I know more about what they are talking about than they do because it is a waste of my breath (and I wouldn’t get to hear the outrageous things they say!) When I tell my son about an experience  that might help him, I always say, “I know you won’t listen and that you have to learn this for yourself the hard way, but if I can save you a few tears along the way, I feel as a mom I have to share my experience with you.” Funny, the older he gets and the more times he sees I was right, the more he has started listening to me. But he is older and much wiser than most of these kids at school!

Today I had one student who is definitely the worst offender when it comes to knowing it all, explain to me about being gay. She is not gay and I don’t know why she thought I was so ignorant but she did! I listened and nodded and then immediately texted my gay best friend who is like one of my sons. We have been friends for about 15 years. He and I go to the beach every summer together for a week away from it all. I told him in my text about her “lesson”and his response was ” Tell her that you have one… and that your gay friend dresses better than her and has more products than her, too!!” I chuckled and moved on with my day. I can’t wait to hear what she wants to teach me next!

  1. Do I have anything to learn from this girl on how to be gay.. I do feel like sometimes I’m falling behind on the queer life style front.
